What makes you different?

I think many people believe that what you choose in your 20s would be your final career; however, I took the plunge and changed my career in my early 30s. It was scary, yet the step I needed to take. I went to Lincoln Tech and joined Hughes, and that’s where my success story started.

What does your day look like?

Since I am in the 3rd year of an apprentice, I work on my own. I usually do maintenance, repairs, new installs, and more, but what I enjoy the most is that the work is refreshing each day. It is never the same. For example, if I am working on maintenance one day, I would be working on repairs the next day.

Maintenance changes in the spring and the fall, typically doing filters, belts, fans and motors. The service repair work is different from preventive maintenance. Repairs can involve using a torch for brazing work and replacing shorted compressors.

Also, new installations are quite interesting; for example, if an AC comes in, you get to observe and learn a lot about how it works, so there is always new stuff to see and learn from. It has a unique dehumidifier system. I should also mention the support system I receive throughout the day. The support system is fantastic. Pat, our team leader, is always there to guide everyone. He is more like a mentor to me.

Lastly, for Ex: CVS units are different in a new account. I go through all the equipment. Pretty much that’s all, but it varies every day.

How do you like working on your own?

It is great working alone as I get to experience working on everything on my own. I can handle everything from start to finish, which is a great experience.

How do you like working on the field?

I enjoy outdoor work. It feels great to be on top of 10 stories, which allows me to see the view of the entire neighborhood, and this is exactly what I signed up for. The experience is phenomenal.

Which benefit do you appreciate the most?

It’s like I have to give a lot, but in return, I also get a lot. In short, it is a win-win situation.

Services: New Jersey / Bronx

I am in my 2nd year of an apprentice at Hughes, and I am currently attending school and look forward to passing the test.

What does your day look like?

My typical day consists of me working alone and working with a partner. I work alone when I work on repairing the motors and pulleys. Secondly, the rest of the 50% day involves working with a partner, which consists of a variety of activities.

How do you like working on your own?

I really love working on my own. It’s like I can use my knowledge and experience to solve complex problems. It gives me an opportunity to approach the problem hands-on and think of the best solution quickly and efficiently. The more you know, the faster you work on your own!

While working alone, I work on boilers and refrigeration.

How do you like working on the field?

The best part of working in the field at Hughes is meeting experienced and trained people. They are quite humble in their interactions. Especially if you are struggling with something or don’t know anything, they would be ready to teach you.

Which benefit do you appreciate the most?

I used to work for non-union, and there is a huge difference between non-union and Hughes. Here we have scheduled raises, so I really appreciate the money. As for benefits, we are offered 100% health coverage, which is commendable. Also, the training that they offer is so good. You pay for the school and get your own training from experienced staff. All in all, it is a good opportunity, which is hard to miss or leave, so I am thankful to be working at Hughes.

What does your day look like?

I am working in my 3rd year in the Bronx and joined as a journeyman in May 2021. As I have five years of training behind me, I have more responsibilities, and I am expected to handle accounts on my own.

On a daily basis, I take care of and manage around 5 to 6 buildings. It is a challenge for me as an engineering guy to manage the accounts. Also, I take care of all the CVS’ in the Tristate and manage the CVS distribution site with 90 to 100 pieces of HVAC equipment. My work also involves fixing and maintenance, refrigeration, heating, and cooling. I take care of all the projects in the Bronx. Since I know all of the buildings, they usually send me to all buildings for most tasks.

How do you like working on your own?

I usually work by myself, and I enjoy working alone. But what I really like is that if I need someone to help me, there will always be someone available to come out and help me. For example, I am easily able to request a crane or new unit and seek help with installing new equipment. It is safe to say that Hughes does not leave you stranded; you will receive help.

How do you like working on the field?

Working in the field is different for me as I work in two areas. Either I work on the roof, or I work in a -15 degrees freezer. In order to survive the cold temperatures of the freezer, I need to wear a suit, which makes me look like a fireman.

Which benefit do you appreciate the most?

I appreciate Hughes's approach toward retirement. At the age of 62, it will offer benefits such as pension and annuity. It also offers a top salary in your career, so I will say money is one of the benefits I appreciate the most.

As a 29-year-old, I have got stability at Hughes, which is quite hard to find at other places. Back when Covid-19 was on the rise, many companies let go of their employees, but I appreciate that Hughes did not let anyone go during Covid-19 and offered stability to its employees. They are quite cemented in the industry.

All in all, Hughes allows you to be the best at what you do!

Currently, I am in my last year of an apprentice, and this also might be the year when I begin as a journeyman.

What does your day look like?

My day typically starts at 5:30 am in the morning in the Brooklyn Meat Market. In the early mornings, I work on the coolers. My day lasts for 8 hours of work on a daily basis, but there is overtime work as well. I not only work on the weekdays but also on Saturdays when I work on the coolers. Also, parts have a lead time. Hughes is very busy, and since there is a lot of work to do, there is a projected increase in jobs.

Which benefit do you appreciate the most?

There are a variety of benefits that I enjoy. Foremost is the attitude of the Hughes team towards the employees. Hughes has really helpful and great people on its team, and their attitude towards employees is commendable. There is a mutual process of self-respect. If you give respect, they give you respect in return.

Moreover, the company is very flexible to work OT, and you get a nice paycheck afterward. Meaning that you get rewarded for what you do. All expenses are taken care of as reimbursements come back right away. All in all, I would say it is a terrific company to work for.
